Laser Cut Acrylic Christmas Tree

This is a commission from a friend who always wanted a black Christmas tree. The design uses black glossy acrylic for the “branches”. The acrylic was cut from two sheets in spiraling star patterns that are then interlocked, anchored, and hung from the central clear acrylic cylinder that forms the tree trunk. A spiral of glow-in-the-dark acrylic is wound with battery operated lights and is mounted under the black star “branches.” The base was carved from 5 layers of acrylic and houses the battery box and the remote control for the lights under panels that are attached to the base with magnets for easy access. My original hopes for the design were to make it collapsible so that the tree so that the branches and light layers could be lift off the trunk and the trunk pulled free from the base and then the pieces could be stored flat and reassembled easily but the pre-strung lights and the fragility of the intertwined branches made that impractical.
